When construction occurs, a common practice is setting up barricades and signs to close off pedestrian traffic around the work zone. Keeping pedestrian access open during construction is often challenging because there is limited space within the public right-of-way.

Disruptions in the pedestrian network can restrict access to destinations, which increases the occurrences of pedestrian roadway crossings, improper pedestrian movements and pedestrian exposure to vehicular traffic. Not to mention, sidewalk closures can often last until a job is complete.
